Center for Natural Capital Welcomes Certified Forester David Richert

Today, Forester David Richert has joined the Center for Natural Capital’s Consulting Collaborative with an immediate focus on sustainable community forest management and ecosystem services-friendly woody biomass energy for renewable heat and power. David is a certified forester and certified arborist with 12 years of experience managing public and private forests.  David has developed and implemented forest management strategies for a range of forested parcels from large scale conservation holdings (2,000+ acres) to small, seemingly abandoned, urban forest parcels (<1 acre).  In addition to conventional forest management-stand establishment, mid rotation treatment, and timber harvesting-David has experience with woody biomass for renewable heat and power, natural areas management, mitigating wildfire risk in the wildland urban interface, arboriculture, invasive species identification and management, urban and community forestry, and specialty and/or non-timber forest products.

David’s professional interests have been shaped by the changing forest: management of small forest parcels, appropriately-scaled woody biomass energy for renewable heat and power, and community forest management (i.e. cluster development, forest producer cooperatives, etc).

A graduate of Virginia Tech’s College of Natural Resources and Environment, David holds a B.S. in Forestry (1998) and M.S. in Forestry (2001).  David is a former employee of the Virginia DCR-Division of Natural Heritage, the Virginia Department of Forestry and the New River-Highlands Resource Conservation and Development Council, and has worked with hundreds of individual forest landowners and dozens of natural resource organizations.
