Freshwater Mussel Survey Completed for Smith Creek Restoration Project

This week, a freshwater mussel field team completed an investigation of Smith Creek, a tributary of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, VA, US

A, in preparation for streambank restoration. A portion of the bank to be restored is shown below. The team cleared the way for the project to proceed and noted that Smith Creek has potential for future reestablishment of freshwater mussels native to the valley of Virginia.

With the VMRC permit and this project now complete, mobilization of equipment and preparations for bank stabilization will begin next week.

Funding for this project was provided by individual and corporate supporters, such as Merck Corporation, through the Center’s Ahyayha environmental conservation crowdfunding platform.
