Betty Dixon

Director of Social Enterprise

Betty Dixon is a social worker and entrepreneur with over 25 years experience providing community based services throughout Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic.  After a stint in both the public and private sectors, Betty co-founded Virginia’s first statewide intensive in-home child and family counseling agency, which she grew and managed through an acquisition and IPO into a $1 billion dollar company.  Having returned to her 3rd-generation Madison County dairy farm, she is now a Master Naturalist and board member with Rural Madison.

Betty assists the Virginia Community Wood Energy Program in understanding regional and cultural barriers related to wood energy and develops ongoing strategies for community engagement. She also helps potential users to identify resources and local systems necessary to support conversion to organic thermal energy where feasible.

As the Center’s first Director of Social Enterprise, Betty will be focused on solving societal challenges by networking with governmental and human service agencies as well as individual advocates and private nonprofits to identify needs, resources and funding opportunities. Her passion is to match interests and needs with work that not only provides income, but creates opportunities and careers that help to solve social and environmental challenges. Through her vast experience and understanding of researched best practices, Betty hopes to build programs and jobs that assist youth, veterans and other vulnerable populations to thrive, while helping to conserve and preserve our natural resources.
